## Symbol convention

Convention: IEC
Form: Rectangular element with MUX qualifier and select inputs using G dependency
Qualifying-symbol and dependency conventions as explained in TI's public overview of IEEE Std 91-1984, which incorporates IEC 617-12 work. Independent educational drawing; not certified IEC geometry or an IEC database identifier. The counterpart is the matching functional concept; no equivalence of every detailed standard graphic is asserted.
Related representation: [Digital multiplexer](https://eloragrid.ai/symbols/digital-multiplexer)

IEC MUX element whose select inputs, grouped with G dependency, pick which data input reaches the output.

## In plain English

### What does IEC multiplexer (MUX) mean?

The IEC multiplexer carries the MUX additional drawing mark. Select inputs are drawn with a binary grouping bracket producing G0 to Gn, and each data input is labelled with the matching number, so the data input whose number equals the select value is ANDed through to the output. An EN input, often active low, enables the whole element.

### A simple example

Multiplexers on control drawings route one of several signals to a shared output, for example selecting a measurement channel or an operating mode source. The binary grouping makes the select range clear without drawing a decoder.

### What the drawings help you do

The symbol does not state the switching time or whether outputs glitch during a select change. Those are device timing considerations.

### This particular reference

IEC MUX element whose select inputs, grouped with G dependency, pick which data input reaches the output. The analogue multiplexer passes analogue levels through switches; the logic MUX passes logic states.

### Terms

- Signal: Electrical information passed between devices, rather than necessarily the main power supply.
- Rating: A value stating the conditions for which equipment is specified.
- Schematic: A drawing showing function and connections rather than physical appearance.

Concept diagram: Identify the device and form → Read the connections and state → Check the equipment reference

## What it represents

An EN input, often active low, enables the whole element.

## How to read it

- Read the binary grouping to find the select range.
- Each data input number matches a G value.

## Information to show or reference

- Show select inputs with a binary grouping bracket.
- Number data inputs to match.
- Mark EN polarity.

## Important distinction

The analogue multiplexer passes analogue levels through switches; the logic MUX passes logic states.

## Facts

- Qualifier: MUX
- Select notation: Binary grouping with G dependency
