Battery pack monitor

In plain English

What does Battery pack monitor mean?

A pack monitor measures quantities associated with the complete battery pack.

A simple example

A system can monitor pack current and voltage in addition to measurements made at individual cells.

What the drawings help you do

Use this block for measurements associated with the pack as a whole, such as its total voltage or current. Show any separate cell monitor explicitly. This helps the reader distinguish the pack’s overall electrical state from the individual-cell information needed elsewhere in a battery-management system.

Pack
A connected battery assembly considered as a complete unit.
BMS
A battery-management system containing the functions selected for that battery.

Before using this reference

  • Name the pack-level quantities actually measured.
  • Identify any separate cell-monitor connection.
  • Show the data or status interface to the battery controller.
Is a pack monitor the same as a complete BMS?

A battery-management system can include monitoring, estimation, balancing, protection and control. The pack monitor represents the specified measurements, not an automatic claim that all those other functions are included.
