Non-maintained emergency luminaire plan mark

Plan mark for an emergency luminaire that lights only when the normal lighting supply fails.

In plain English

What does Non-maintained emergency luminaire plan mark mean?

Non-maintained emergency luminaires stay off while the normal supply is healthy and light from their internal battery on failure. Plans show the emergency luminaire mark with NM or with the legend distinguishing it from maintained fittings, typically along escape routes and at changes of direction.

A simple example

The luminaire must monitor the local lighting circuit, so its permanent supply is taken from the same final circuit as the normal lighting in that area. The plan should make this relationship clear for the installer.

What the drawings help you do

The symbol does not show whether the unit is self-contained or fed from a central battery. The legend or schedule states the system type.

This particular reference

How to read it

  • Confirm the unit monitors the local lighting circuit.
  • Check spacing along escape routes.

Information to show or reference

  • State duration and system type.
  • Take permanent supply from local lighting circuit.
  • Reference escape route plan.

A distinction that matters

A maintained luminaire is lit continuously; this one only lights on failure.
