Side-by-side reference

Understand the difference.

Compare the meaning, drawing context and source references of two entries. A similar graphic or shared abbreviation does not establish equivalence.

ANSI/IEEE differential voltmeter symbol

A differential voltmeter reads the difference between two applied voltages rather than either voltage alone. In synchronising panels it is wired between the incoming and running VT secondaries so the operator can see when the voltage difference is small enough to close the breaker.

Autodesk IEEE-oriented Instrumentation and Sensors form: Differential Voltmeter. Autodesk publishes this block under its IEEE Symbol Preview. The counterpart is the matching functional concept in the library; no equivalence of every detailed standard graphic is asserted.

A distinction that matters

A differential voltmeter shows the difference between two voltages; a double voltmeter shows both voltages on separate scales.

Differential voltmeter

A differential voltmeter indicates a difference between documented voltage inputs. Its reference and compared circuits must be identifiable so the indicated difference has a defined meaning.

A distinction that matters

A differential voltage indicator is different from a transformer differential protection function.
