Side-by-side reference

Understand the difference.

Compare the meaning, drawing context and source references of two entries. A similar graphic or shared abbreviation does not establish equivalence.

IEC

IEC magnitude comparator (COMP)

The IEC magnitude comparator is marked COMP. Its inputs are grouped as word P and word Q with binary weights, and its outputs are labelled P>Q, P=Q and P<Q. Cascading inputs carry the same labels in a separate group so that comparators can be chained for longer words.

Form evidence
Rectangular element with COMP qualifier and P, Q input groups. Qualifying-symbol and dependency conventions as explained in TI's public overview of IEEE Std 91-1984, which incorporates IEC 617-12 work. Independent educational drawing; not certified IEC geometry or an IEC database identifier. The counterpart is the matching functional concept; no equivalence of every detailed standard graphic is asserted.

A distinction that matters

An analogue voltage comparator compares two voltages, not binary words.

A distinction that matters

Digital word comparison differs from an analogue voltage comparator, even though both can use a comparison block in a diagram.
