Thyristor-controlled reactor

A thyristor-controlled reactor is an air-core reactor in series with a pair of anti-parallel thyristor valves. Delaying the firing angle reduces the current conduction period, so the reactor absorbs a continuously adjustable amount of reactive power from zero to its full rating.

A distinction that matters

A TCR varies its absorption continuously; a thyristor-switched reactor is only fully on or fully off.

Static var compensator

A static var compensator is a shunt-connected installation that controls voltage by rapidly varying the reactive power it exchanges with the network. Its branches are typically a thyristor-controlled reactor, one or more thyristor-switched capacitors and harmonic filters, all connected to the secondary of a dedicated step-down transformer.

A distinction that matters

An SVC varies switched reactances; a STATCOM uses a voltage-source converter and holds output current better at low voltage.
