Battery cell voltage monitor

In plain English

What does Battery cell voltage monitor mean?

A cell voltage monitor measures individual cells within a series-connected battery.

A simple example

A pack controller can compare cell voltages instead of seeing only the total pack voltage.

Original functional explanation. Arrows show information or energy roles; two-headed arrows identify two-way interfaces. This is not a pinout, certified standards graphic or complete circuit.

What the drawings help you do

Show a separate measurement connection for each monitored cell in a series string. Adding the cell voltages gives a pack voltage, but it can conceal one cell being higher or lower than its neighbours. Label cell order so the measurement channels can be traced to the correct physical cells.

Series string
Cells connected end to end so their voltages add.
Sense wire
A connection intended to measure a condition rather than carry the main load current.

Before using this reference

  • Identify cell order and the monitor’s channel mapping.
  • Separate sense wires from the main current path.
  • Reference the selected monitor’s input connection requirements.
Why not just measure the whole pack?

Two packs can have the same total voltage while their individual cells have different voltages. Cell measurements reveal those differences; a single pack measurement cannot identify which cell caused them.

A distinction that matters

A normal total pack voltage can hide differences between individual cells.
