Battery fuel gauge

In plain English

What does Battery fuel gauge mean?

A battery fuel gauge estimates how much usable charge remains in a battery.

A simple example

An operator display can show a charge estimate instead of only battery voltage.

Original functional explanation. Arrows show information or energy roles; two-headed arrows identify two-way interfaces. This is not a pinout, certified standards graphic or complete circuit.

What the drawings help you do

Show the measurements entering the gauge and the charge estimate sent to the controller. A fuel gauge is like a battery dashboard: its estimate depends on the battery model and measurements, rather than simply reading the voltage once. Keep the measurement path separate from the battery’s main power cables.

State of charge
An estimate of the charge remaining compared with the battery’s usable charge capacity.

Before using this reference

  • Identify the battery chemistry and pack arrangement.
  • Label measured voltage, current and temperature where used.
  • Name the reported estimate and the controller receiving it.
Does 50% charge mean half the operating time is left?

Not necessarily. The load, temperature, battery condition and the gauge’s estimation method affect operating time. State of charge is an estimate of charge remaining, not a promise about runtime.

A distinction that matters

An estimate of remaining charge is different from a guarantee of remaining operating time.
