Isolated CAN transceiver

In plain English

What does Isolated CAN transceiver mean?

An isolated CAN interface combines a CAN signal path with its specified electrical isolation barrier.

A simple example

A controller-side circuit can communicate with a bus-side circuit referenced to another electrical domain.

Original functional explanation. Arrows show information or energy roles; two-headed arrows identify two-way interfaces. This is not a pinout, certified standards graphic or complete circuit.

What the drawings help you do

Show the controller domain, isolation boundary and bus domain explicitly. The CAN electrical interface is on the bus side, while logic signals cross the selected barrier. A complete diagram also accounts for bus-side power, termination and protection rather than treating isolation as the whole network design.

Bus domain
The circuit reference associated with the external CAN connection.
Isolated power
A separately specified power path maintaining the required electrical separation.

Before using this reference

  • Identify supply and reference for both domains.
  • Show CAN controller signals and bus connections separately.
  • Reference isolation, termination and bus-protection requirements.
Does an isolated transceiver always include isolated power?

No. Some devices combine functions and others need a separate bus-side supply. The selected product documentation determines what power arrangement is included.

A distinction that matters

The isolation barrier and any power supply for the bus side must be accounted for separately.
