Photovoltaic string

In plain English

What does Photovoltaic string mean?

A photovoltaic string is a defined series-connected group of modules.

A simple example

A solar drawing can identify each string before it reaches a combiner or inverter input.

Original functional explanation. Arrows show information or energy roles; two-headed arrows identify two-way interfaces. This is not a pinout, certified standards graphic or complete circuit.

What the drawings help you do

Identify the modules connected in series and label the string’s ends. A string is a connection arrangement, not a particular module product. The module choice and number in series determine the conditions that must be checked against the connected equipment and installation requirements.

Series
An end-to-end connection in which the connected path passes through each element.

Before using this reference

  • State module type and number in series.
  • Identify the string’s positive and negative connections.
  • Cross-reference the selected combiner, isolation and receiving equipment.
Does adding modules in series have the same effect as adding parallel strings?

No. Series connections add module voltages; parallel connections combine current paths. The complete electrical design must account for the selected modules and their operating conditions.

A distinction that matters

The number and type of modules determine string conditions; the label alone does not.
