PoE power-sourcing interface

In plain English

What does PoE power-sourcing interface mean?

A PoE power-sourcing interface manages the supply end of a compatible powered Ethernet connection.

A simple example

A selected network switch can provide power to a recognised powered device through its PoE port.

Original functional explanation. Arrows show information or energy roles; two-headed arrows identify two-way interfaces. This is not a pinout, certified standards graphic or complete circuit.

What the drawings help you do

Locate this function at the end providing power to the cable. Show detection and power control separately from the Ethernet data function. A port must use its selected PoE arrangement rather than simply placing a supply across arbitrary network conductors.

Power budget
The available power allocated across the selected ports and operating conditions.

Before using this reference

  • Identify the sourcing port and intended powered device.
  • Reference the supported classification and power-budget arrangement.
  • Show protection and port-control connections from the selected design.
Does a PoE-capable port guarantee enough power for every device?

No. The source, receiver, cable and negotiated operating conditions must be compatible. A device’s full operating demand and the source’s available budget require their own checks.

A distinction that matters

A sourcing port's class and power capability must match the complete link and connected device.
