ANSI/IEEE coaxial cable symbol

IEEE-oriented drawings represent coaxial cable with a centre line enclosed by an outer conductor outline, often with the outer conductor brought out to a ground or connector shell at the ends. The convention is used on communications, metering time-sync and RF schematics in US-practice drawing sets.

Drawing use: Schematic
Application: Connections & wiring
Reference family: IEEE / ANSI
Form evidence: Coaxial cable with outer conductor outline. Independent illustration in IEEE drafting context; no equivalence of every detailed standard graphic is asserted.

A distinction that matters

The ANSI coaxial form has a current-carrying outer conductor; the ANSI shielded conductor form has a screen only.

Coaxial cable

The coaxial cable symbol shows an inner conductor surrounded by a concentric outer conductor that forms the return path. Unlike a screened conductor, the outer conductor of a coaxial cable is part of the signal circuit and sets a defined characteristic impedance. It appears on antenna feeds, GPS time-sync leads to protection relays, video circuits and some partial-discharge sensor connections.

Drawing use: Schematic
Application: Connections & wiring
Reference family: IEC
Form evidence: Coaxial pair form. Independent IEC-context illustration of a concentric pair; consult IEC 60617 for the exact graphic.

A distinction that matters

In coaxial cable the outer conductor carries return current; in a screened conductor the screen only intercepts interference.
