ANSI/IEEE twisted pair symbol

IEEE-style schematics show a twisted pair with the two conductor lines crossing repeatedly over a short length. It identifies conductors that must be kept as a pair in one cable, such as differential signal lines, current transformer secondary pairs run in instrument cables, or communication buses.

A distinction that matters

A twisted pair is twisted only; a shielded conductor has a screen and may not be twisted.

Twisted-pair indication

A twisted-pair indication identifies the documented association of two conductors as a twisted pair. The pair association matters to conductor identification and termination, even when the two wires are drawn apart elsewhere. It does not by itself describe the cable screen or its termination.

A distinction that matters

Twisting and shielding are different cable attributes; a twist indication does not prove a screen is present.
