Arc-flash fibre loop sensor

A fibre loop sensor is an unjacketed optical fibre routed through busbar chambers or along switchgear lines. Light from an arc anywhere along its length enters the fibre and reaches the arc-flash relay, so one loop can cover a large area that would need many point sensors.

A fibre loop covers a long area without locating the arc precisely; a point sensor watches one compartment.

Arc-flash point light sensor

A point light sensor is mounted inside a switchgear compartment, such as a breaker or cable compartment, and detects the intense light of an internal arc. It is wired or fibre-connected to an arc-flash relay that usually also checks for overcurrent before tripping, so light alone from an external source does not cause a trip.
