Dynamic voltage restorer

A dynamic voltage restorer is connected in series between the supply and a sensitive load through an injection transformer. When the supply voltage sags, a converter fed from a DC store or from the supply itself injects the missing voltage so the load sees an almost constant voltage, typically for sags lasting up to a few seconds.

A distinction that matters

A DVR injects series voltage for sags; a STATCOM injects shunt current to support bus voltage.

Static synchronous compensator

A static synchronous compensator is a voltage-source converter connected in shunt through a reactor or transformer. By controlling the magnitude of its AC output voltage relative to the network, it supplies or absorbs reactive current. It responds within milliseconds and can maintain close to rated current even when network voltage is low.

A distinction that matters

A STATCOM uses a converter and keeps reactive current at low voltage; an SVC uses switched reactances whose output falls with voltage.
