Hydrogen electrolyser

An electrolyser uses DC current to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. In microgrids and renewable hubs it acts as a large controllable load that can absorb surplus solar or wind generation, with the hydrogen stored for later use in a fuel cell or sold off site.

A distinction that matters

An electrolyser consumes electricity to make hydrogen; a fuel cell consumes hydrogen to make electricity.

Fuel cell

A fuel cell produces DC electricity from an electrochemical reaction between a fuel, usually hydrogen, and oxygen from air. Unlike a battery it does not store its reactants; it runs as long as fuel is supplied. Stack voltage falls noticeably with load current, so a DC/DC converter or inverter almost always follows it.

A distinction that matters

A fuel cell converts supplied fuel continuously; a battery stores a fixed charge and must be recharged.
