Neutral-to-earth link

The neutral-to-earth link connects the neutral and earth bars at one point, normally the main switchboard. In Australian and New Zealand practice it is the MEN link, and in other TN-C-S schemes it is the point where the incoming PEN is split. It provides the low impedance path that lets earth faults operate overcurrent devices.

A distinction that matters

The neutral-to-earth link bonds N and PE in service; the earth test link is opened only to test the electrode.

PENPEN conductor mark: original educational illustration

PEN conductor mark

The PEN mark identifies one conductor that performs both the protective and neutral functions. It appears in TN-C and TN-C-S arrangements, typically between the supply transformer and the main switchboard, where the PEN is later separated into N and PE at a defined point.

A distinction that matters

A PEN conductor combines N and PE functions; a neutral mark shows a conductor that has no protective role.
