Protective conductor mark

This mark identifies the protective conductor within a group of conductors drawn as one line. It shows that the circuit carries its own PE conductor to the load, which is how the fault return path for automatic disconnection is provided in TN systems. The letters PE are often written beside the mark.

A distinction that matters

The PE conductor mark identifies a conductor in a run; the protective earth symbol identifies a connection point to the earthing system.

Protective earth

Protective-earth identification indicates a connection serving the protective earthing function. It should be distinguished from functional earthing, signal references and other grounding conventions. The drawing context and applicable documentation establish the meaning of each connection.

A distinction that matters

Protective earth, functional earth and a signal common are different functions even when a drawing uses visually related marks.
