Three-phase circuit with neutral and PE marking

Single-line diagrams often state the conductor complement of a circuit with a short notation beside the line, for example 3/N/PE 400/230 V 50 Hz. This tells the reader at a glance that the circuit has three phases, a neutral and a separate protective conductor, which is the normal TN-S final distribution arrangement.

A distinction that matters

The 3/N/PE notation states a whole conductor complement; individual N, PE or PEN marks identify one conductor on a stroke.

Neutral conductor mark

When a single line represents a group of conductors, one of them can be identified as the neutral with a distinct mark on its stroke, together with the letter N where clarity requires. This lets a single-line diagram tell a three-phase three-wire feeder from a three-phase four-wire feeder without expanding to multi-line form.

A distinction that matters

A neutral mark identifies the N conductor; a PEN mark identifies a combined neutral and protective conductor with different switching rules.
