Power plant controller

A power plant controller measures voltage, current, active and reactive power at the plant connection point and adjusts setpoints of all inverters or turbines to meet the network operator's requirements. Typical functions include active power limits, ramp rates, frequency response, voltage or reactive power control and power factor control.

A distinction that matters

A power plant controller manages one generating plant at its connection point; a microgrid controller also manages loads and islanding.

Microgrid controller

A microgrid controller coordinates the sources, storage and controllable loads within a microgrid. It sets operating points for inverters and gensets, maintains spinning reserve, sheds and restores load, and manages transitions between grid-connected and islanded operation, including black start and resynchronisation.

A distinction that matters

A microgrid controller supervises the whole system; a genset or inverter controller controls one device.
