Static synchronous compensator

A static synchronous compensator is a voltage-source converter connected in shunt through a reactor or transformer. By controlling the magnitude of its AC output voltage relative to the network, it supplies or absorbs reactive current. It responds within milliseconds and can maintain close to rated current even when network voltage is low.

A distinction that matters

A STATCOM uses a converter and keeps reactive current at low voltage; an SVC uses switched reactances whose output falls with voltage.

Static var compensator

A static var compensator is a shunt-connected installation that controls voltage by rapidly varying the reactive power it exchanges with the network. Its branches are typically a thyristor-controlled reactor, one or more thyristor-switched capacitors and harmonic filters, all connected to the secondary of a dedicated step-down transformer.

A distinction that matters

An SVC varies switched reactances; a STATCOM uses a voltage-source converter and holds output current better at low voltage.
