Thyristor-switched capacitor

A thyristor-switched capacitor connects a capacitor bank through anti-parallel thyristors, usually with a small series reactor to limit inrush. The thyristors switch the capacitor in at the instant when the network voltage equals the capacitor voltage, avoiding transients, and switch it out at current zero. It is either fully on or fully off.

A distinction that matters

A TSC switches capacitors in steps without transients; a mechanically switched capacitor uses a breaker and is much slower.

Static var compensator

A static var compensator is a shunt-connected installation that controls voltage by rapidly varying the reactive power it exchanges with the network. Its branches are typically a thyristor-controlled reactor, one or more thyristor-switched capacitors and harmonic filters, all connected to the secondary of a dedicated step-down transformer.

A distinction that matters

An SVC varies switched reactances; a STATCOM uses a voltage-source converter and holds output current better at low voltage.
