Volt-squared-hour meter

A volt-squared-hour meter integrates the square of voltage over time. Quantities such as iron losses in transformers and the stress on some insulation vary roughly with voltage squared, so the register gives a measure of exposure that a simple time-at-voltage record would not.

A distinction that matters

A V²h meter integrates voltage squared; a kWh meter integrates power.

Integrating instrument general symbol

Integrating instruments add up a quantity over time, and IEC-style diagrams draw them as a rectangle with a narrow band across the top. The unit inside, such as kWh, kvarh or Ah, tells the reader what is being totalised, and extra marks in the band can show multi-rate or demand features.

A distinction that matters

The integrating form totalises; the indicating circle shows an instantaneous value.
