Side-by-side reference

Understand the difference.

Compare the meaning, drawing context and source references of two entries. A similar graphic or shared abbreviation does not establish equivalence.

ANSI/IEEE resistor symbol

The fixed-resistor form identifies resistance in the circuit path. This original zigzag illustration explains the resistive function without assigning a standard graphic number; the component value, power rating and reference designator remain essential to reading the actual schematic.

Autodesk IEEE-oriented Resistive Components functional form. Autodesk explicitly publishes this block under IEEE Symbol Preview. The counterpart is the matching functional concept; no equivalence of every detailed standard graphic is asserted.

A distinction that matters

A fixed resistance and a variable resistance are different component functions, even if their basic graphical family is related.

Resistor

A resistor representation identifies a resistive component in a circuit. Different drawing conventions can use different basic outlines, while additional qualifiers distinguish variable resistors, shunts or heating elements. The value, rating and purpose are separate annotations.

A distinction that matters

IEC-style rectangular and other conventional resistor depictions can describe the same component concept, but qualifiers and documentation still matter.
