RS-422 interface

In plain English

What does RS-422 interface mean?

An RS-422 interface uses differential signalling for its selected serial connection.

A simple example

A controller can communicate through a suitable differential driver and receiver arrangement.

Original functional explanation. Arrows show information or energy roles; two-headed arrows identify two-way interfaces. This is not a pinout, certified standards graphic or complete circuit.

What the drawings help you do

Identify the driver and receiver ends of the intended differential connection. Do not copy an RS-485 multi-driver bus arrangement just because both names refer to differential interfaces. The chosen parts and network design establish the permitted connections and direction of information flow.

Driver
The circuit that produces the electrical signal on a connection.
Receiver
The circuit that interprets the incoming electrical signal.

Before using this reference

  • Identify each driver and its receivers.
  • Reference the selected termination and cable arrangement.
  • Show logic connections and the receiving equipment’s electrical reference.
Is RS-422 interchangeable with an RS-485 bus?

Not automatically. Driver arrangements, permitted connections and device characteristics differ. Confirm the complete link rather than treating the interface names as equivalent wiring instructions.

A distinction that matters

An RS-422 label does not automatically imply an RS-485 multi-driver bus arrangement.
