AOIANSI AND-OR-invert gate: original educational illustration
IEEE / ANSI

ANSI AND-OR-invert gate

In distinctive-shape drawings the AND-OR-invert function is shown as two or more AND outlines whose outputs enter an OR outline with an output bubble. Data books often draw the AND outlines touching the OR outline to indicate that the whole structure is one gate within one package section.

Two AND outlines feeding an OR outline with output bubble. Distinctive-shape form as used in IEEE/ANSI-style schematics and manufacturer data books. Independent educational drawing; exact standard geometry and compliance are not asserted.

A distinction that matters

The IEC AND-OR-invert uses abutted rectangular & and ≥1 elements instead of distinctive outlines.

IEC AND-OR-invert element

The IEC system draws an AND-OR-invert as several & elements abutted against the left side of a ≥1 element, whose output is negated. Because the common line between the & and ≥1 parts is perpendicular to the signal flow, each & element is understood to feed one input of the OR.

Embedded & elements abutting a ≥1 element with negated output. Qualifying-symbol and dependency conventions as explained in TI's public overview of IEEE Std 91-1984, which incorporates IEC 617-12 work. Independent educational drawing; not certified IEC geometry or an IEC database identifier.

A distinction that matters

Separate AND gates wired to a NOR gate perform the same function but are drawn as distinct elements with visible interconnections.
