ANSI/IEEE main bonding jumper symbol

In North American practice the main bonding jumper connects the grounded conductor, the neutral, to the equipment grounding conductor and enclosure at the service equipment. Its function corresponds to the neutral-to-earth link in TN-C-S systems. Single-line diagrams show it at the service disconnect, and separately derived systems have a corresponding system bonding jumper.

Main bonding jumper form. Independent illustration in IEEE drafting context; no equivalence of every detailed standard graphic is asserted.

A distinction that matters

A main bonding jumper bonds neutral and ground at the service; an equipment bonding jumper bonds metal parts together.

Neutral-to-earth link

The neutral-to-earth link connects the neutral and earth bars at one point, normally the main switchboard. In Australian and New Zealand practice it is the MEN link, and in other TN-C-S schemes it is the point where the incoming PEN is split. It provides the low impedance path that lets earth faults operate overcurrent devices.

A distinction that matters

The neutral-to-earth link bonds N and PE in service; the earth test link is opened only to test the electrode.
