Arc suppression coil

An arc suppression coil is a reactor connected between the system neutral and earth, tuned so that its inductive current balances the capacitive current that flows during a single phase-to-earth fault. The residual fault current becomes very small, so transient arcing faults often self-extinguish and the network can keep running with a sustained earth fault.

A distinction that matters

An arc suppression coil cancels capacitive fault current; a neutral earthing resistor limits fault current but does not cancel it.

Neutral earthing resistor

A neutral earthing resistor connects the star point of a transformer or generator to earth through a defined resistance. It limits earth-fault current, typically to tens or hundreds of amperes on medium-voltage systems and a few amperes on high-resistance earthed low-voltage systems, reducing damage and arc energy while keeping enough current for protection to detect.

A distinction that matters

A neutral earthing resistor limits fault current resistively; an arc suppression coil compensates capacitive fault current with inductance.
