Cable transition joint

A transition joint joins cables of different construction, for example a legacy paper-insulated lead-sheathed cable to a modern XLPE cable, or a submarine cable to a land cable at a landfall. The drawing distinguishes it from an ordinary joint because the two sides have different ratings, impedances and maintenance requirements.

A distinction that matters

A transition joint joins dissimilar cables; a straight-through joint joins two lengths of the same type.

Cable straight-through joint

The straight-through joint connects two cable lengths end to end, restoring insulation, screen and sheath continuity. It is shown on cable route drawings and network diagrams at joint bay positions, because joints are the most common failure points on long underground circuits and their locations are needed for fault finding.
