Side-by-side reference

Understand the difference.

Compare the meaning, drawing context and source references of two entries. A similar graphic or shared abbreviation does not establish equivalence.

IEC sample-and-hold element

The sample-and-hold element has an analogue input, an analogue output and a digital control input. While the control is in the sample state the output follows the input; when it changes to hold, the output keeps the last value. IEC-style analogue diagrams mark the digital control input with a # sign, as TI's overview describes for digital inputs on analogue symbols.

Form evidence
Rectangular analogue element with S/H function and a digital control input. Qualifying-symbol and dependency conventions as explained in TI's public overview of IEEE Std 91-1984, which incorporates IEC 617-12 work. Independent educational drawing; not certified IEC geometry or an IEC database identifier. The counterpart is the matching functional concept; no equivalence of every detailed standard graphic is asserted.

A distinction that matters

An analogue switch alone passes signals; the S/H element includes the hold storage and buffering.

Sample-and-hold amplifier

Acquires an analogue signal during the documented sampling interval and retains a representation during hold.

A distinction that matters

Hold behaviour is an analogue acquisition function; it differs from digital storage in a latch or flip-flop.
