Rotary UPS

A rotary UPS uses a synchronous machine running continuously on the critical bus, with stored kinetic energy in a flywheel or induction coupling bridging the gap until a coupled diesel engine starts and takes over. A choke between the utility and the critical bus lets the machine condition the supply and isolate the load from network faults.

A distinction that matters

A rotary UPS uses rotating machines and kinetic storage; a static UPS uses power electronics and a battery.

Flywheel energy storage

Flywheel energy storage holds energy in a rotating mass, usually in a vacuum enclosure with magnetic or low-loss bearings. A motor-generator accelerates the rotor to charge and decelerates it to discharge, and a bidirectional converter links the variable-frequency machine to a DC bus or AC network.

A distinction that matters

A flywheel stores kinetic energy for seconds to minutes; a battery stores chemical energy for much longer durations.
