Split-phase inverter

A split-phase inverter produces two AC outputs 180 degrees apart with a shared neutral, giving 120 V from each line to neutral and 240 V between lines. This matches North American residential and small commercial supplies, so the inverter can feed a standard load centre in off-grid or backup systems.

A distinction that matters

A split-phase inverter produces two antiphase legs; a three-phase inverter produces three legs 120 degrees apart.

Bidirectional inverter-charger

An inverter-charger contains one bidirectional power stage between a battery and an AC output, together with an internal transfer relay connecting the AC input to the output when a valid source is present. With the source available it passes power through and charges the battery; without it, it opens the relay and inverts from the battery.

A distinction that matters

An inverter-charger has an internal transfer relay and charger; a plain DC-to-AC inverter only converts battery power to AC.
