Utility grid connection

The utility grid connection symbol represents the public supply network as seen from the installation. It is drawn at the top or edge of a single-line diagram to show where power enters, and in a microgrid it is one of several sources, typically the reference source when the microgrid is grid-connected.

A distinction that matters

A utility connection represents the external network; a grid equivalent source is a study model with defined impedance.

Point of common coupling

The point of common coupling is the location on the network nearest to the installation where other customers are, or could be, connected. Harmonic, flicker and voltage limits in connection agreements are assessed at this point, and microgrid islanding decisions are often defined relative to it.

A distinction that matters

A PCC marks an assessment point; a utility grid connection symbol represents the supply itself.
