What it represents

A mechanical interlock indication links devices whose movements are constrained by a physical relationship. A physical interlock constrains the movements of two associated mechanisms. It remains a mechanical relationship even when the electrical circuit also contains permissive contacts.

Use both device tags and the intended exclusive positions to make the relationship readable. Draw any electrical feedback or auxiliary interlock contact separately, since it represents another interface.

How to read it

  • Identify both devices and the prohibited simultaneous condition.
  • Mechanical interlocking differs from an electrical interlock contact or software permissive.

Information to show or reference

  • Identify the associated device, circuit or diagram boundary.
  • Identify both devices and the prohibited simultaneous condition.
  • Cross-reference the equipment data, terminal mapping or operating-state legend needed to interpret the form.

A distinction that matters

Mechanical interlocking differs from an electrical interlock contact or software permissive.
