What it represents

This qualifier indicates that manual access to the operating mechanism is protected or restricted. An operating mechanism may sit behind a cover or another access restriction. The qualifier draws attention to that access condition without describing the construction of the cover, lock or enclosure.

A circuit drawing can record the access-qualified operation while a GA or equipment document shows the actual opening and hardware. Do not infer a particular key sequence from this qualifier.

How to read it

  • Record the actual access arrangement separately from the contact logic.
  • A protected-access indication does not specify a keyed lock, enclosure rating or permission system by itself.

Information to show or reference

  • Identify the associated device, circuit or diagram boundary.
  • Record the actual access arrangement separately from the contact logic.
  • Cross-reference the equipment data, terminal mapping or operating-state legend needed to interpret the form.

A distinction that matters

A protected-access indication does not specify a keyed lock, enclosure rating or permission system by itself.
