What it represents

This qualifier indicates a signal or propagation path with one documented direction. The flow is an information or signal relationship, rather than necessarily a conductive power path. A sending element and receiving element can each need separate auxiliary supplies.

Label the signal and interface at each end. Keep supply conductors and signal-direction annotations visually distinct when both appear in the same diagram.

How to read it

  • Identify the source, destination and signal type in the surrounding diagram.
  • Signal direction must not be confused with the direction of power flow.

Information to show or reference

  • Identify the associated device, circuit or diagram boundary.
  • Identify the source, destination and signal type in the surrounding diagram.
  • Cross-reference the equipment data, terminal mapping or operating-state legend needed to interpret the form.

A distinction that matters

Signal direction must not be confused with the direction of power flow.
